The Price of Rice - The Global Food Crisis
By LeslieBrooke | June 18, 2008

So, what did you have for dinner last night? Me? I went to a local restaurant with a group of friends and my bill when I walked away was $30 for two people. Sadly, I didn’t hesitate for a second in my decision to go spend that kind of money on one meal. Next time, I will.
When I got home I saw the topic for the Compassion bloggers. The Global Food Crisis. Something I’ve heard about but not really taken the time to understand. Reading about it was eye opening. Apparently, some of the poorest who survive on less than $2 per day are forced to spend 80% of that money on food due to the rising costs. If they don’t they will starve - and many are. Can you imagine? Actually starving because you can’t afford rice? This is not okay. It’s not okay. Not okay.
Compassion is doing something about it. On June 25th they are holding “A Day of Fasting and Prayer” to raise awareness for those suffering, and to raise funds to provide food for them. Please click the link above and read about it for yourself. Watch this video. Add the widget to your blog, and join in the day with me and many others around the world. If you save money fasting that day, it’d be great if you would donate it to the Compassion Global Food Crisis Fund.

I can understand starving. A number of years ago I sent my family to another town many miles away. I knew they had food and were taken care of. I ran out of money where I was living. I was isolated and went several days without food. I then discovered that there was some canned dog food underneath a cabinet. I ate it. I do understand hunger. I just wish that people would have a spiritual hunger for my Messiah, Jesus and His Word.

It breaks my heart how so many are struggling just to put food on the table - Sadly the problem is growing domestically as well. There was a news story on NBC about the increase in people going to foodbanks and that they cannot keep up with demand.
Thank you for sharing this…

while in Mozambique last year our little group befriended a young man who helped us translate a little at the jewelry market and basically keep us from being ripped off and then to help us with the younger children that MAY have been near us to steal our cameras, etc.
He was wonderful and soulful and genuinely interested in us and God.
We decided that we could take him to this restaurant for breakfast.
He was so happy to be with us but at the same time really uncomfortable being at the restaurant with ALL this buffet of breakfast items.
when he found out the price of his breakfast (US $2.50) he had big tears and couldnt swallow.
“Mama, how you spend THAT amount of money on just me? with that money you could buy a big bag of rice that feeds a whole family for days!”
my heart sunk…how do i explain to him that where i live…$2.50….
and now…i know that here where I am from people are having to make choices…the poor are having it the hardest, for sure.
